So there you are. Photographer chosen (hopefully Vestige!), date set, deposit paid. What should you do to prepare, and make the most out of your shoot?

1. Start shopping. Visit local vintage shops, Etsy, Ebay. If you haven’t rented wardrobe or hired a wardrobe stylist, it is your job to create the looks that you will be modeling in on the day of your shoot. Once you find your outfit(s), don’t forget to shop for accessories, shoes (if you don’t have any in your current wardrobe), and possibly props. Shoes are more attractive in images when the soles aren’t scuffed. Think about that as you decide whether to invest in a pair of shoes specifically to shoot with.

2. Get inspiration online or from books, and choose some possible hair and makeup looks. That way you can be sure that you will be happy with the styling. Many girls allow the stylists to do whatever they like on the day of the shoot, and that’s fine, too.

3. Practice some poses in the mirror, See what angles you like best, and take note or practice so you can show off your best looks. Find vintage photos online, in books, or check out some of your favorite modern pinup’s social media pages for ideas. It can make your modeling experience a bit smoother. Choose a photographer who does pose coaching and communicates openly during shoots so that the pressure isn’t all on you to perform.

Choose a photographer who does pose coaching and communicates openly during shoots so that the pressure isn’t all on you to perform.

4. Wear sunscreen. A sunburn can last a couple of weeks, and the peeling (although it can be photoshopped) can be unattractive. Take special care to tan evenly if you will be spending time in the sun.

5. Shave and wax a couple of days before your shoot so your skin is able to recoup and look its best. Make sure to get your brows and upper lip done, as well as any place that will be seeing the light of day at your shoot. If you do facials, make sure you schedule yours about a week before your shoot.

6. Do your nails, and make sure they will go with your look for the shoot. Multicolored nails may not go so well at a classic 40’s glam shoot, and that mani you might be in love with today could come back to haunt you. Simple is usually the way to go. Classic red is always good!

7. Steam or iron your wardrobe the evening before your shoot. You are going to look perfect, and so should your silk dress!

8. Wear something comfortable and seamless to your shoot. Jeans tend to leave marks, as do socks, some underwear, bras, corsets, and shapewear. Even if you will not be wearing revealing clothes, you never know what may be a distraction.

9. Bring Eucerin lotion to your shoot, and rub it all over before you get in front of the camera.

10. Relax and enjoy every moment of pampering and confidentally know that you are creating art that you will cherish for a lifetime!

I then paired the outfit with some rad vintage accessories like this ivory pill-box hat and lion head belt. Of course I couldn’t leave out some awesome vintage cat eye sunglasses and my lucite springolators. It is always such a pleasure working with Susana who isn’t just a talented photographer but a wonderful humanist I adore.

This blog post was made by Vintage Vandalizm. I highly recommend checking out her blog for amazing fashion, stories, and giveaways

Here is another awesome look from my last shoot with Susana Vestige. This was my favorite set from all the outfits we shot because I have been dying to wear this rainbow knit two piece vintage suit (1950s). Ironically, I had no blouse to go with it and had to run to my local thrift shop and BOOM, I found the perfect button down. Thanks to her, one of the images she shot made it into Pink Bow City Magazines #13 issue but I loved them all so here are some you haven’t seen.

It’s Pink Lemonade! Not only is this the perfect pink drink, but it happens to radiate retro realness, with the ever so lovely combination of pastel pink & lemon. To celebrate summer, a cold glass of Pink Lemonade is a must, and rocking its cute and colorful combination…

Inspired by Sue Lyon as ‘Lolita,’ in the 1962 film, we opted for a fun and flirty look, with flouncing ruffles and a flock of flamingos. Keeping to the iconic look, heart shaped glasses were a must, and scream summer season. A big, blonde, bombshell bouffant was only proper for a Lyon-look!
Enter Unique Vintage’s ‘Mrs. Davis’ bathing suit. The pink gingham halter top & the matching high waist bottoms have instantly become a go-to bikini for us pink collar girls. From dainty details, to retro ruffles and pink gingham, this 1960s inspired bikini is the perfect thing for any beach baby. Whether you want to go Gidget, or Brigitte, this darling little number is the ultimate in sweet & sassy!

As you may know, Tara is the one for teals, and Ashlyn adores her shocking pinks. Leave it to The Pretty Dress Co. to make our favorite shades, in the richest, most decadent, deep, hues in the fabric that we can't live without - velvet!

This blog post was borrowed from my newest coffee table book’s cover models, Tara and Ashlyn. Their blog The Pink Collar Life is incredible, and you must go visit it!

Art Deco & Asian opulence describes this fancy Pink Collar day, filled with flutes full of champagne, vibrant velvets, jades & jewels, and silks & satin. With the help of The Pretty Dress Co. & our own Pre-code Peony clutch, some dark & daring, rich jewel toned ensembles were debuted, in deco decadence.

Leave it to The Pretty Dress Co. to make our favorite shades, in the richest, most decadent, deep, hues in the fabric that we can’t live without – velvet!

Today’s styling was inspired by 1930s & 1940s glamour with an Asian flair, blended with Art Deco. We adorned our Immodesty Fatale pencil dresses each with 30s/40s era, family heirloom jeweled pins, and 1940s velvet tilt hats, featuring pretty plumes, and feathers with florals. We also incorporated earrings from our line, including the Gentlemen Caller earrings, and the Art Deco Fan earrings.

The Pretty Dress Co. has perfected the pattern known as the “Fatale” which is an absolutely lust worthy cut, made in every sort of shade and style. As we mentioned in La Dolce Vita, this dress is the ultimate in curve hugging, bombshell silhouettes, and the way the velvet drapes off the shoulder, is something Marilyn would surely be living in!
